Beginning the Church's liturgical year,
Advent (from, "ad-venire" in Latin or "to come to") is the season encompassing the four Sundays (and weekdays) leading up to the celebration of Christmas. The Advent season is a time of preparation that directs our hearts and minds to Christ’s second coming at the end of time and also to the anniversary of the Lord’s birth on Christmas. The final days of Advent, from December 17 to December 24, focus particularly on our preparation for the celebrations of the Nativity of our Lord (Christmas).

This month, we're honoring the men and women from Africa who have pioneered the faith! Many forget that Christianity didn't start in Europe. Black Catholics have had a huge impact on the history and traditions of Christianity. The church has been celebrating Black Catholic History Month since 1990 when the National Black Catholic Clergy Caucus of the United States instigated it. November seemed appropriate because it holds special days for two prominent African Catholics: St. Augustine whose birthday is on November 13th, and St. Martin de Porres whose feast day is celebrated on November 3rd. OLC BCHM activities are as follows:
Faith Formation invites you to join them for a special Black Catholic History Month presentation in the Church on
November 6th from 9:00 - 10:45 a.m.
The Perpetual Hope Gospel Choir Concert is
Sunday, November 13th at 3:00 pm in the Church. A free will offering will be taken to support future choir concerts. All are invited and welcomed.
Family Life Bake Sale will take place after Masses on
November 19th and 20th.
Harambee Mass will be celebrated on
Sunday, November 20th at the 11:00 Mass. OLC welcomes
Most Reverend Joseph N. Perry, Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago. A light reception will follow Mass in the PLC.

All Saints Day is November 1st. Mass will be held at 8:30AM. All Saints Day is a Holy Day of Obligation and celebrating All Saints Day by attending Mass is a wonderful way to honor the saints, who constantly intercede with God for us. Generally, All Saints' Day is a Catholic Holy Day of Obligation, meaning all Catholics are required to attend Mass on that day, unless they have an excellent excuse, such as serious illness.
